With the Red Carpet this afternoon (Thursday, February 15) at 5:30 pm, the 74th Berlin International Film Festival officially opens, marking the eighteenth year of partnership between the Berlinale and the TOP-IX Consortium, as streaming partner.

From 15 to 25 February, from its temporary offices, on the seventh floor of the Berlinale Palast, TOP-IX will be broadcasting live (and subsequently made available on demand), on the Berlinale website, red carpets, photo calls, press conferences of the protagonists, as well as the opening and closing ceremonies of the festival.

As we approach the Impact Deal Showcase on November 23 during EVPA Impact Week in Torino, let’s take a moment to recognise that this event isn’t just a standalone moment — it’s the last chapter of a journey that began on May 31.

From May 31 until now: A Timeline of Impact

Back in May, these innovative enterprises set out on a mission to amplify their impact. Since then, they’ve tackled challenges, embraced new ideas, and committed themselves to make a positive difference. As Impact Deal acceleration program, we did our best to provide them with the tools, mentorship, and resources needed to grow.

For instance, it’s the case of volvero where we created the conditions to access proprietary data from Telco and Bank to boost their roadmap towards sustainable mobility.

Milestones Achieved, Challenges Overcome

These enterprises have hit some impressive milestones, from the program’s kick-off to the final preparations for the Impact Deal Showcase. They’ve refined their strategies, forged partnerships, and successfully raised funds.

To make some examples: one week ago, press releases announced that EIB would provide Xnext with €20 million venture debt loan to support research and development, and Relearn recently publicly disclosed a 1M seed round.

On November 23, these impact enterprises will share their stories with a diverse audience, including data providers, program partners, impact investors, and enthusiastic participants of Impact Week. They’re not just presenting their projects; they’re revealing the outcome of months of hard work and a relentless pursuit of impact.

Beyond the enterprises mentioned above, we will meet Bin-e, Dedalo AI, OPT/NET, Untap and Valuebin.

The advantages of the new infrastructure were described at the “TOP-IX Talks” last May by Alessandro Galardini, Network Engineer at the Consortium, and Alessandro Bulletti, Senior Consulting Engineer at Nokia.

Significant leap in the speed of available ports (from 100 G and 400 G); scalability of interconnection services, programmability are just some of the main features of the new infrastructure.

Here, in a video made by Nokia staff, Tech Director Andrea Casalegno and Executive Director Leonardo Camiciotti tell how TOPIX uses Nokia’s 7250 IXR routers to provide a flexible range of throughput, scale, port density and speed to meet growing connectivity needs.

Five Alpine huts in the territories of the Unione Montana Valli di Lanzo, Ceronda e Casternone and the Unione Montana Alpi Graie can finally benefit from fast Internet connections. These are the Paolo Daviso refuge in Groscavallo (2,280 metres), the Bartolomeo Gastaldi refuge in Balme (2,659 metres), the Luigi Cibrario refuge in Usseglio (2,616 metres), the Ernesto Tazzetti refuge in Usseglio (2,642 metres) and the Vulpot refuge, which stands at 1,805 metres on the Malciaussia Lake.

The project originated from a specific request by the Unione Montana di Comuni delle Valli di Lanzo, Ceronda e Casternone and the Unione Montana Alpi Graie to activate a network infrastructure in the Lanzo Valleys area, taking advantage of the reactivation of the optical fibre backbone along the Turin-Ceres railway line, owned by the Mountain Unions themselves (UUMM).

The Città Metropolitana di Torino allocated a contribution of EUR 41,000, in addition to the funds made available by the UUMM. Additionally, as part of the Community Networks initiative, Internet Society (ISOC) provided TOP-IX with a contribution for the reactivation of the optical fibre backbone between Turin and Ceres and the creation of two nodes at stations at Germagnano and Ceres railway stations. These two stations have excellent visibility towards some UUMM transmission towers, useful for the distribution of radio connectivity services in the Valleys.

For the realization of the Alpine Huts connectivity project, the availability of the network operators belonging to the TOP-IX Consortium was requested and, following technical and economic evaluations, the operator Erre Elle Net was selected. It set up quickly the infrastructure necessary to provide connectivity services at the Alpine huts.

The network infrastructure is available to the Consortium operators to provide broadband connectivity in the area covered by the Mountain Union, both for the population and for business activities. This provides an important service for enhancing the territory, making it more attractive than typical mountain areas.

The first phase of Impact Deal Acceleration Program ended with the Bootcamp at OGR, culminating in the Data Pitch on Friday, July 7.

The 15 participating enterprises had the opportunity to gather valuable suggestions, pieces of advice, and explore potential collaborations. Additionally, they took part in two different workshops. The first one “Data Value for Social Enterprises” was delivered by Federico Bartolomucci – POLIMI. The second one, “Pitching for Purpose”, was led by Alessia Gianoncelli – EVPA.

The Bootcamp reached its climax with the Data Pitch, where enterprises presented their pitches in front of Impact Deal Partners and particularly the Data Club Members.

The final natural goal for the startups was to secure the opportunity to enter the second stage of the program and therefore to further collaborate with the Data Club.

Valuebin –  Italy: “Building the next generation’s sustainability algorithm, giving you the power to make more sustainable choices during your shopping”

Volvero – Italy: “Towards a more efficient and sustainable mobility”

Xnext – Italy: “Developing the most advanced real-time inspection system”

The Kick Off for the second stage of the Program is scheduled for September 14th.

 AG 4 Future Food, the acceleration program – promoted by the Sella group and implemented by its Venture Incubator dpixel starts today. It aims to identify and support the growth of startups for the development of innovative, economically sustainable, accessible and efficient solutions within the international agri-food chain.

The program aims to identify and grow teams carrying innovations and technologies particularly attentive to impact that will provide the most appropriate tools to face the challenges that await us in the coming decades: population growth (+10 billion by 2050), diversification in food consumption per capita, climate change, food waste, ecological inefficiency, undernourishment and scarcity of natural resources. The areas of intervention are: innovative foods, biotechnologies applied to agriculture, automation and robotics, data management and logistics.

The TOP-IX Consortium contributes to the acceleration programme as a technical partner.

Fondazione CRT, OGR Torino, and Microsoft, in collaboration with TOP-IX, ISI Foundation, Ashoka, Impact Hub, and The Data Appeal Company (which will directly contribute to Data Club this year), present the second edition of Impact Deal, a European data-driven acceleration program for businesses with social and environmental impact.

The call for applications is open from March 16 to April 26.

In 2022, thanks to specific training, mentorship from domain experts, national and international visibility opportunities, and access to exclusive datasets, selected companies were able to develop innovative solutions focused on generating measurable positive impact. The contribution of Data Club – a group of companies and organizations, public and private entities – is fundamental in this regard, which in addition to TIM, Banca Sella, Fondazione Snam, and the City of Turin, will add The Data Appeal Company, BioEnerys, and Wind Tre for the 2023 edition.

During the six months of the program, Impact Deal works to accelerate projects focused on the application of data science, the growth of entrepreneurial activities with social and environmental purposes in alignment with the sustainable development goals defined by the United Nations (SDGs). By facilitating the meeting between corporations, traditional investors, impact companies, mentors, and experts in data science, the program encourages initiatives that combine economic, social, and environmental sustainability, allowing the development of specialized professional figures through a transfer of skills focused on access and use of data for long-term impact.

The first edition of the program received 40 applications from impact enterprises from 8 countries operating in different sectors: Smart Environment, Smart Cities, IoT, Logistic/Supply Chain, Digital Consciousness, Human Resources Services, Open Innovation, AI, Cultural Heritage, Food, Health, Medical Care, Agriculture, Augmented Mobility, Vehicles, and Energy solutions. 12 companies participated in the first phase, of which 7 were Italian and 5 were foreign (from the UK, Denmark, Portugal, and Switzerland). Among them, Alba Robot, The Newsroom, Pinbike, Virtuosis, Wiseair, Open Impact, and Aroundrs were selected for phase 2 of the program, obtaining numerous visibility opportunities and achieving excellent results both during the course and in the following months.

The DECICE project (Deep-Learning based Cognitive Computing Engine) aims to create a cognitive computing engine based on machine learning and deep neural networks to support the creation of autonomous intelligent systems. One of the main goals of the project is to create an information systems federation, a system in which different systems can collaborate and share information to provide a more accurate and complete response to user requests.

The project is funded by the European Union and TOP-IX is part of the consortium that developed the proposal.

The DECICE cognitive computing engine is based on the use of machine learning algorithms, a technology that has proven effective in many areas, such as image recognition and natural language.

The information systems federation created by DECICE will allow different systems to collaborate and share information, which will greatly increase the accuracy and completeness of the responses provided to users. In addition, this system will also allow for the management of large amounts of data, as each system will contribute with its own information and knowledge.

Another important aspect of the DECICE project is the creation of a Digital Twin, a virtual copy of a real system or process, which allows for simulating and analyzing the behavior of the system in question in order to optimize its performance.

The DECICE project brings together a team of leading researchers and industry companies from all over Europe, including universities, research centers and companies operating in different fields. Together, these partners will work to develop the DECICE information systems federation and to demonstrate its effectiveness through a series of demonstrations in real environments.

The kick-off event – the first in-person event – will be held March 28 and 29 in Göttingen.

The TOP-IX Consortium, as a Day-one member of Gaia-X and founding member of Structura-X, the Gaia-X lighthouse project involving 28 industrial entities from 10 European countries with the common goal of building a federated infrastructure for the European cloud, participated in the recent Gaia-X Summit 2022.

As part of Structura-X, together with Engineering Ingegneria Informatica Spa, Aruba SpA, Politecnico di Torino, CSI-Piemonte, IONOS and DE-CIX, TOP-IX implemented and presented a PoC of an Internet Exchange and Cloud Service Provider federation as an enabling technology for extending Kubernetes clusters across different administrative domains.

The Internet Exchange federation project has attracted considerable interest from a number of European stakeholders and proves to be an important driver in propelling TOP-IX and Internet Exchanges toward a new paradigm, in which the network platform becomes an ecosystem for delivering distributed, scalable, and resilient cloud services. Adoption of the Federation Services framework will also ensure compliance with Gaia-X governance and enrich the range of cloud and connectivity services that TOP-IX, its consortium members and other IXs can deliver and consume on the federated infrastructure.
