As we approach the Impact Deal Showcase on November 23 during EVPA Impact Week in Torino, let’s take a moment to recognise that this event isn’t just a standalone moment — it’s the last chapter of a journey that began on May 31.

From May 31 until now: A Timeline of Impact

Back in May, these innovative enterprises set out on a mission to amplify their impact. Since then, they’ve tackled challenges, embraced new ideas, and committed themselves to make a positive difference. As Impact Deal acceleration program, we did our best to provide them with the tools, mentorship, and resources needed to grow.

For instance, it’s the case of volvero where we created the conditions to access proprietary data from Telco and Bank to boost their roadmap towards sustainable mobility.

Milestones Achieved, Challenges Overcome

These enterprises have hit some impressive milestones, from the program’s kick-off to the final preparations for the Impact Deal Showcase. They’ve refined their strategies, forged partnerships, and successfully raised funds.

To make some examples: one week ago, press releases announced that EIB would provide Xnext with €20 million venture debt loan to support research and development, and Relearn recently publicly disclosed a 1M seed round.

Showcasing Progress to Stakeholders

On November 23, these impact enterprises will share their stories with a diverse audience, including data providers, program partners, impact investors, and enthusiastic participants of Impact Week. They’re not just presenting their projects; they’re revealing the outcome of months of hard work and a relentless pursuit of impact.

Beyond the enterprises mentioned above, we will meet Bin-e, Dedalo AI, OPT/NET, Untap and Valuebin.

Save the Date for the Grand Finale

If you plan to attend EVPA Impact Week or are on the event’s registered list, you are already part of this journey. If this is not the case and you think you should be in the audience, write us at impactdeal@top-ix.org to secure the last available seats.

TOP-IX Consortium is now part of IDSA – International Data Spaces Association. This is another milestone in the path that has brought us to enter BDVA and to be Day-1 member of Gaia-X. The goal is to take an increasingly active role in the construction of the new European strategy as far as Cloud, Data and digital sovereignty.

IDSA aims at the definition of a common standard to build DATA SPACES, meaning common data spaces at sectoral level, in order to create ecosystems capable of facilitating the sharing and the exploitation of data by those subjects who until now have not been able to leverage the real potentiality of data.

As usual, TOP-IX contribution is aimed at enhancing the solid expertise and experience in the field of network architecture. “As an internet exchange we have enabled connections for 20 years – says Leonardo Camiciotti, Executive Director at TOP-IX –, now we aim also at empowering skills and infrastructure in order to support and boost a new generation of data and services collaboration”.

TOP-IX, thanks to its neutral and geographically distributed backbone, can be a natural candidate for the design and implementation of testing federated architectures aimed at sharing of data and computational resources.

OGR Torino, Fondazione CRT and Microsoft present Impact Deal; an acceleration program for European enterprises with a social and environmental mission.

The new data-collaboration ecosystem will offer to the selected companies training, mentorship, resources, and datasets (open and proprietary) coming from a group of private and public entities (The Data Club).

With Impact Deal, OGR Torino, Fondazione CRT and Microsoft are launching a system of concrete actions to enhance data and data skills, based on the awareness that today any public or private, profit or non-profit initiative needs to set its own measurable objectives towards an effective long-term impact.

The project, developed in partnership with TOP-IX, The Data Science for Social Good Center (c/o OGR Torino), Impact Hub, Ashoka and The Data Appeal Company will be held in the OGR Tech inside the OGR Torino’s hub for innovation and applied research.

The approach will be open, neutral and multilateral, and will allow business players, traditional investors, mentors, experts in Data Science to meet each other, in the perspective of economic, social and environmental sustainability and aiming at developing specialized professionals.

The starting point of the initiative will be the call for impact enterprises – open from February 3 to April 3, 2022 – where a maximum of 12 European companies will be selected to access the acceleration program, divided into two phases.

The first phase, lasting about two months, will focus on a journey to provide specific skills in Data Science, Artificial Intelligence and impact entrepreneurship.

In the second phase, lasting about 3 months, 3 to 5 startups will be selected and the aim will be on accelerating the business through the development of real projects and solutions enabled by data thanks to the mentorship and strategic collaborations.

The final step will be a Demo Day where the “accelerated” companies will show their progresses to an audience of potential investors with a particular vocation for impact investing.

BIG DIVE is in the middle of its journey. The intensive training program about Data Science, Machine and Deep Learning, Data Visualization and Data Engineering is preparing to face the last two modules of the 2020 edition. Meanwhile, TOP-IX applied to become part of the Big Data Value Association (BDVA).

BIG DIVE main novelty has been the splitting of the course into four training modules, which replace the four consecutive full time weeks, that was the common feature in the previous eight editions. The new format has been appreciated by Divers. It allowed them to approach “step by step” the different topics of the constantly increasing Big Data theme, and to enter the program with different background and knowledge levels.

The BIG DIVE traveling companions were the same from beginning and as usual they contributed to the organization of the course. In addition to the TOP-IX consortium, Axant, the ISI Foundation and TODO are part of the team. We also confirmed the presence (someone in presence and others remotely) of guest lecturers, who brought their proven on-field experience to enrich the path of Divers.

Module 1 (“From Zero to Data Science with Python”), held on September, was taught by the TOP-IX team and covered the Python programming and Data Science, from the initial data explorations to the creation of data-driven projects. We hosted two lectures: “Geopandas and Geospatial data” by Maurizio Napolitano from the Bruno Kessler Foundation, “TimeSeries and KNIME”, curated by Daniele Tonini, partner in Target Research.

Module 2, organized in mid-October, was an intensive five- days deep on Machine and Deep Learning with a focus on computer vision. ISI Foundation researchers (Alan Perotti and Adnrè Panisson) were the resident teachers and we had three external lectures.
Alberto Danese, Head of Data Science at Nexi and Kaggle Grandmaster, spoke about the interpretability of Machine Learning models and shared his experience on the Kaggle platform, an online community of data scientists and Machine learning professionals based on challenges and awards promoted by international companies and organizations.
Marco Aldinucci and Iacopo Colonnelli, from the Computer Science Department at Università degli Studi di Torino, explored the connections between Machine Learning, Deep Learning and High Performance Computing and Cloud, based on the experience gained with academic research and with the HPC4AI project. Finally, Matteo Giaretti, senior data scientist at Glovo and ex-diver, after talking about machine learning processes in Glovo, offered a detailed excursus on the forecasting capabilities of yesterday, today and tomorrow, with specific reference to the world of Time Series (series historical data).

A total of 15 Divers took part in the first two modules, which rise to 22 considering who have enrolled in the third and fourth modules (the registrations are still open). Someone chose to participate in a single module, some others have picked modules according to their needs and someone decided to follow all the four modules.
The average age of the Divers is 33, the citizenship is predominantly Italian, except for a Cameroonian participant living here in Turin: on this side the health emergency had a strong impact by limiting international participation. In the first two modules, the divers followed the lessons mostly in presence, with the exception of one participant in Module 2.
Based on Covid-19 security rules and the evolution of the infections, we will decide whether the third and fourth modules will take place in the classroom or through video conference. In both cases, the training system is solid as well as the available teaching tools.

Module 3 will be held starting from November 16th and will focus on the theme “Communicating and Visualizing Data”. The resident teacher will be Fabio Franchino from TODO; guest lecture has been already confirmed: Matteo Moretti, co-founder at Sheldon Studio. BIG DIVE 2020 will close with Module 4, “Deep Dive into Data Engineering”, scheduled from November 30th to December 4th.

For modules three and four, registrations are still open (here the form).

To strengthen its role in the Big Data, Data Science and Data Engineering sector, the TOP-IX Consortium has recently applied to become part of the Big Data Value Association (BDVA), formed by a balanced mix of industries of large, small and medium-sized, which represents the private counterpart of the European Commission for the implementation of the Big Data Value PPP program.
In this way, TOP-IX places itself in a key role in the Turin scenario, where the Italian Institute for Artificial Intelligence (I3A) will be located.

You can now apply for BIG DIVE 2020, the brand new edition of the intensive training program in the field of Data Science, Data Visualization and Data Engineering organized by TOP-IX in collaboration with  Axant, Fondazione ISI and TODO.

In 2020 BIG DIVE has changed its classic format: the 4 consecutive weeks become 4 stand-alone modules dedicated to the foundations of Data Science with Python, Machine and Deep Learning, Data Visualization and finally Data Engineering. Each module will be available individually or as part of a complete and unique training program aimed at providing the technical skills and methodological approaches to generate the maximum impact in data-driven projects.

The new structure was designed starting from the numerous feedback received over the years and aims to meet the needs by business customers (such as companies and organizations that intend to train their employees) and at the same time to open up to the heterogeneous audience with different backgrounds and entry levels.

The training program is structured as follows:

Module 1 – From Zero to Data Science with Python // 14-18 September

Module 2 – Machine and Deep Learning intensive // 12-16 October

Module 3 – Communicating and Visualizing Data // 16-20 November

Module 4 – Deep Dive into Data Engineering // 30 November -4 December

Among the many changes, the strengths of BIG DIVE remain unchanged: the value of teachers and guest lecturers with proven experience in the field, the hands-on approach and the highly collaborative and practical training mood.

Registration will close one week before the beginning of each module and the Early Bird Price will expire on May 31st. There are also discounts for students and promotional packages for people who simultaneously purchase more than one module.

Finally, we are planning a final Hackathon-style event where the students of the 2020 edition, past Alumni and Data Scientists will be able to prove themselves with the challenges and the data provided by the selected Data Sponsors (companies, startups, non-profit organizations).

Practical informations. The course will take place at TOP-IX Consortium, via Maria Vittoria 38, in Turin. For information and to apply as a participant you can visit the site. The reference email is info.bigdive@top-ix.org

Please note the courses’ dates has been updated on April 8th, see the comprehensive webinar.

The month of September, for TOP-IX, starts with data, divided between sport and the third sector.

On September 18 we will be in Chiavari for the executive course “Football Data Analyst Training” powered by WyScout, in partnership with WyLab, which hosts the event, and TOP-IX, and with the collaboration of the University of Pisa / CNR. This is a non-technical course, aimed at concretely illustrating the potential of a data-driven approach in the football sector
After the “kick-off” centered on new professions in the world of football, TOP-IX will offer two food for thought: “From Data Hype to the new opportunities made possible by the use of Data and Algorithms” and “The tools, the environment and the workflow of Data Scientists”.

But already on 9 September, starts the course of CorDATA, a free training course conceived with the aim of developing awareness of the potential offered by the adoption of Civic Technologies and a Data-Driven approach in international cooperation organizations. The training course is organized by TOP-IX, ISI Foundation, Moxoff and HeartInData, and supported by Fondazione Cariplo and Compagnia di San Paolo, as part of the Innovation for Development project.
The course is structured in 7 non-consecutive days, of which 5 are training sessions, with interventions by national and international guests, and 2 laboratory sessions, led by tutors who are experts in the field. The class is formed: 35 students are participating, equally distributed between women and men, mainly coming from the sectors of International Cooperation and the Third Sector.

Still on the subject of data and the third sector, on September 19, TOP-IX will be in Trento, on the occasion of the sixth conference of the CUCS network (University Coordination for Development Cooperation), where he will be among the speakers of the afternoon session “Civic Technologies among Theory and Practice“.
