Additional companies from all over Europe joined the Lighthouse Structura-X project, make the initial group (Atos, Aruba.it, DE-CIX, Deutsche Telekom, Engineering, Noovle and TOP-IX) grow to 28 members from 10 countries (AssoSoftware, City Network, Cloud&Heat Technologies, CS Group, CSI, EBRC, Elmec, Fabasoft, International Dataspaces, IONOS SE, KPN, Luxinnovation, Mainstream, next layer, OpenNebula Systems, OSISM, ThreeFold Tech, Tietoevry, United Group, Vivacom).

The initiative emerged on the sidelines of the recent Gaia-X Summit in Milan in November. “We very much welcome the initiative of the infrastructure providers,” said Max Ahrens, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gaia-X. “The industrial implementation of the Gaia-X standards by cloud and infrastructure providers is an essential building block for functioning data sovereignty in Europe.”

Structura-X invites more cloud service providers (CSP) to join. The common goal is to shape their existing infrastructure services into an eco-system for European data sovereignty. An overarching European cloud infrastructure is being created. Users will be able to test and deploy their services and data rooms in a Gaia-X-approved infrastructure.

Structura-X will work closely with Gaia-X AISBL, which among other things defines the technical framework for data sovereignty. At the same time, Structura-X will enable the necessary scale for new cross-sector and cross-country collaboration in the cloud. The previous fragmentation of the European cloud market will thus be overcome.

European cloud providers have launched an initiative to build common infrastructure services that meet Gaia-X requirements. Around 20 companies, including TOP-IX, as interconnection services provider, have agreed to make their services Gaia-X compliant.
The Lighthouse Structura-X project complements existing industry-specific lighthouse initiatives for the automotive sector (Catena-X), agriculture (AgriGaia) and finance (EuroDat). Initial certified offerings are expected to be ready by the middle of next year.

Nokia will supply 400GE IP routing platforms to enable TOP-IX to scale its regional interconnection and peering infrastructure both directly and through collaborations with partners across Europe. Along with expanding the geographical reach and capacity of its services, the solution will provide TOP-IX with enhanced network automation and operational capabilities to improve time to market for its customers.

TOP-IX will deploy the Nokia 7250 Interconnect Router (IXR)-X1 platforms with 400GE network interfaces to expand and upgrade its network to offer high speed IP routing for interconnection, peering and access to cloud services. The routers will be deployed in TOP-IX locations to increase the geographical scale, reach and capacity of its services.

The platforms enable TOP-IX to support services at speeds of up to 400GE with the ability to seamlessly increase capacity in the future.

The solution will also allow TOP-IX to enable secure cloud services over the IP routing solution, allowing its customers to maintain data sovereignty.

An investment to grow in terms of capacity

Thanks to the collaboration between the TOP-IX Consortium and the ENGIM Foundation, the AWS re/Start cloud computing training program is launched today in Italy.

AWS re/Starts a full-time, skills development program that prepares individuals for an entry-level professional position in the cloud. Through real-world, scenario-based learning, hands-on labs, and course work, learners gain the technical skills they need for junior cloud roles. The program’s mission is to build a diverse pipeline of entry-level cloud talent.

TOP-IX and the ENGIM Foundation, already partners in numerous training initiatives from software development to Big Data, will take care of the local organization, coordination, teaching and will support students, after the course, by putting them in contact with companies and potential employers.

The kick-off of the first Italian AWS re/Start edition is scheduled for May 24, 2021. The program will be full-time and, according to the health provisions in force, it can take place online, “blended” or face-to-face at the ENGIM Artigianelli headquarters in Turin.

Today and tomorrow, the GAIA-X Summit is launching the European cloud computing platform, GAIA-X. TOP-IX Consortium is pleased to announce that it is among the day 1 members.

GAIA-X seeks to break the continent’s reliance on American and Asian platforms. The global market of public cloud computing is controlled by Amazon Web Services (47,8%), followed by Microsoft Azure (15,5%), Alibaba (7,7%), Google (4%) e IBM (1,8 %).

The project was born on the Paris – Belrin axis, then it expanded to a growing number of partners from different European countries. Currently, seven countries are involved and the aim is to further expand the number of European partners.

EuroCloud Day is an event organized by EuroCloud Italy to discuss the opportunities of Cloud Computing Services for Italian companies.

EuroCloud Day Europe is held at the same time and national chapters of EuroCloud (active in more 20 countries) will share in videoconference speeches of European Commission and Industry representatives during the day, including European Commission vice-president Neelie Kroes.

One of the main topics covered during the day is how Cloud Computing relates to the European and Italian Digital Agenda.
