The TOP-IX Consortium, second Italian Internet Exchange, already present in Milan with its own infrastructure, has activated a new Point of Presence in the DATA4 data center in Cornaredo (MI).

The decision is even the result of requests from the Turin consortium members, who see the new PoP as an opportunity to increase the possibilities of interconnection with the OTTs present in the Milan area and to improve the reliability of the same interconnections. «The presence of TOP-IX in the DATA4 Campus offers new business opportunities for the members of the Consortium – says Andrea Casalegno, Tech Director at TOP-IX –. This opens up interesting opportunities for new services available through our Marketplace».

The partnership with DATA 4 was signed with a view to strengthening cooperation on the national territory between Internet traffic interchange points and neutral data centers, to support telecommunications operators. «We are particularly proud to host the new TOP-IX Point of Presence on our Campus – says Davide Suppia, Country Manager at Data4 ITALIA –. The interconnection within Internet Exhange Points (IXPs) of Lyon and Turin upgrades from 1G to 10G thanks to Rezopole and TOP-IX.

This service improvement allows TOP-IX and Lyonix members to better manage the continuously growing traffic on their networks.

High Broadband access for economic players is now a requirement. Lyon – Turin interconnection, activated in 2008, has facilitated the traffic exchange (peering) along a new path, shorter and faster.

Benefits of interconnection

Members of the IXPs benefit of bandwidth and latency optimization and cost decrease. But interconnection has also brought many positive consequences for Rhône-Alpes and Piedmont. It brings also positive influence which energizes the entire area, not just in the IT industry. This “digital highway” has different “exits” that that distribute the benefits to the entire valley: interconnection attracts more enterprises, that need broadband as a requirement for their installation.

“We upgrade the link in advance as we’re realized that some providers are not using it to avoid saturation. Going at 10G all our members are confident that they traffic will flow at high capacity and low latency within France and Italy” states Samuel Triolet, Rezopole Director.

France-IX, the French Internet Exchange point, and TOP-IX Consortium have linked their Internet Exchange points. This partnership between the two internet exchange points will boost peering between members from both countries.

Any peer can use the link up to 100Mbps. When reaching a higher need of traffic, the member will have to connect directly on its own or via a reseller to the other IXP.

To benefit from the interconnection, members need to contact their internet exchange NOC and the service will be put in place quickly.

Franck Simon, managing director at France-IX, is delighted with this new project: “From day one it has been in France-IX’s strategy to build interconnections with IXPS located in nearby cities and countries so we could provide the peers present in Europe, especially small ones, a chance to exchange more traffic without adding costs on the bills”.

Silvano Giorcelli, managing director at TOP-IX, emphasizes the advantage: “TOP-IX supports international partnerships that allow our members an important chance to cost-effectively expand their business in Europe.
